ABOUT
Rodrigo Costa (1999, Funchal, Portugal) is a visual artist interested in the concepts of play and childhood applied to the everyday life. Exploring the fields of painting, sculpture, performance, video and installation, he creates colourful, fun, intentionally amateur, odd, DIY-like objects and situations, which aim to encourage self-reflection and the change of certain social behaviours.
Currently based in his homeland, Madeira Island, he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art – First Class from Coventry University in 2020 and has since been dividing his time between art-making and freelancing as curator and cultural manager. In Madeira, he teamed up with different branches of the Regional Government to create, establish and manage two brands that supported and promoted the work of young and/or emerging artists under fair and justly-paid opportunities: anona – galeria de arte juvenil (with the Regional Directorate of Youth, 2021-2023) and FRESH CONTEMPS (with the Regional Secretariate for Tourism and Culture, 2022-2024).
He exhibits regularly with a particular interest in public and community-oriented
projects, working alongside city councils and other public and private organisations.
He was also a member of DGArtes’ Monitoring Committees between 2023 and 2025.

Everything I make stems, first and foremost, from an insatiable interest in understanding and, eventually, responding to our immediate and inconsequential, yet repressed, needs and feelings; those that have been erased and/or reprogrammed by society; our most primitive and innocent “self”. Simultaneously, from the investigation of fruitful ways to revive and validate these most organic instincts and, consequently, from the urgency to shorten the distance between the public and the artistic object, an inevitable second fascination emerges: the evocation and dissection of a simpler era – childhood – that brings into my artistic practice the concepts of play, escapism and abstraction, also inspiring the notorious emphasis on colour, light and scale.
Expanding, therefore, from an almost “childlike” mind – full, confused, transformative, inquisitive – and resorting to diverse media and techniques, I seek to represent expressions that embody the typical fleetness of children's thoughts and actions. Inserted into environments that exaggerate in scale and momentum childhood gestures and memories, amateur, odd, DIY-like objects reflect on how the act of play and embracing unfiltered curiosity – traits inherent to our human condition – can inform, extend and disturb what is, by socially acceptable norms, described as an “adult”.
Everything seems to be happening, everything appears to have already been created; even while avoiding admitting it, we exist drenched in total boredom. We have forgotten the basics and killed pure will. Instead, there is a choice to feed insecurities, rage, hate, egos and depreciation. What I propose with my practice, then, is the setting up of playgrounds for the questioning and liberation of the contemporary being; a journey of self-(re)discovery that dabbles with scale, memory-based reality, community and identity; alternatives (but not escapes) to the overly complicated “now”.
